OK Biobased Standard: Everything You Need to Know
OK Biobased Standard: Everything You Need to Know
Plastic waste is a severe environmental pollution issue, and the demand for plastic products is still very high, with no ideal substitute products found yet. Therefore, most countries worldwide have restricted the use of conventional plastic products and replaced them with readily biodegradable plastic products to create a greener, cleaner, and safer environment.
The OK Biobased label provides comprehensive assurance about the origin of products containing bio-based materials. Your product is certified organic 1, 2, 3, or 4 stars based on the determined percentage of renewable raw materials (% biocarbon). The technical specifications propose an objective method for determining the amount of biocarbon in raw materials, intermediate products, additives, and final products. They have a symbol that conveys this message to end-users.
The OK Biobased Certification is a verification mechanism that determines the source of products and assesses whether they are derived from fossil (petroleum-based) or renewable (naturally-derived) raw materials.
Each biodegradable plastic product must meet the following requirements:
>>> Meeting textile quality standards with the OEKO-TEX 100
All products made (whether in whole or in part) from naturally sourced polymer materials fall within the scope of this Certification (except for solid, gas, or liquid fuels).
Based on concise and resource assessments, products are ranked using a star system. The number of stars, from 1 to 4 stars, is determined by the percentage of renewable components the product operates.
OK Biobased Certification is intended to help companies and distributors enhance their competitive abilities in the renewable products market and help consumers choose better environmentally friendly products. The program was launched in September 2009 and initially targeted European markets, but it now expands globally.
Due to the relatively small amount of waste, low composting temperatures in the garden, and the lack of maintenance compared to industrial composting environments, the path to composting in the park is a complex and slow process.
The OK Home Compost certification ensures complete biological degradation in specific environments, including mixing in the garden. It indicates that a product must undergo rigorous quality control to achieve this Certification.
As a certification organization recognized by European Bioplastics, attaching the Seedling symbol to products that comply with EN 13432 and the seedling symbol, those certified by TUV Austria know that their products can be composted and recognized throughout the European market.
Any package or product labeled OK Compost Industrial is guaranteed fully compostable in an industrial composting facility. This applies to all components, including additives for ink and compostable products. The EN 13432:2000 standard serves as a reference document for Certification.
>>> GMI packaged products certification and why understanding GMI is important
As most marine waste originates from land, the biodegradability of seawater is a valuable property of any product or packaging, whether consumed or not. This information is not recommended for consumers to litter the ocean or elsewhere.
The biodegradability of soil is a significant advantage for agricultural and gardening products, as such products can be locally composted after use. The OK Bio-Degradable Soil label ensures that the product can be fully biodegraded in soil and has no negative impact on the environment.
Products certified as OK Bio-Degradable Water are guaranteed to be biodegradable in freshwater in natural environments, thus significantly reducing waste in rivers and lakes. Note that this does not mean biodegradation occurs in seawater.
In addition to OK Biobased, there are many ways to evaluate the origin and quality of products. You can find more articles on FSC, SMETA, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 standards.

What is OK Biobased Certification?
The OK Biobased Certification is a verification mechanism that determines the source of products and assesses whether they are derived from fossil (petroleum-based) or renewable (naturally-derived) raw materials.
Criteria for OK Biobased Certification?
Each biodegradable plastic product must meet the following requirements:
- The total carbon content of the product is at least 30%.
- The carbon content of natural renewable raw materials is at least 20%.
- 1 star: biobased content from 20% - 40%
- 2 stars: biobased content from 40% - 60%
- 3 stars: biobased content from 60% - 80%
- 4 stars: biobased content over 80%
